What Hedge Funds are holding…

Our latest Hedge Fund 13F analysis (otherwise known as the “VIP List”) is shown below (only the top positions).   These are the most widely held stocks by the managers covered in our quarterly report.  The table is sorted descending by total number of hedge funds (in our list) that held that stock in Q4.  The second table shows what the average “conviction” size was across our group of funds.

For example, last quarter 10 hedge funds reported a position in AAPL and it was (on average) 7.7% of each of their total reported long positions:

(the entire list of 1300+ stocks is available to subscribers)

The more interesting stocks are highlighted in green.

Alot of hedge funds had big bets on Apple (AAPL) going into 2012 and it’s clearly working out so far:

While AAPL has been a big bet in alot of portfolios for several quarters, Google (GOOG) saw in increase in both the number of holders as well as the ave. position size from 3.9% to 6%:

Gilead Sciences (GILD) was a name that saw a pretty substantial increase in the number of holders but really no change in the ave. conviction level – so it looks like a bunch of HF’s initiated “starter” positions – and just in time:

Oracle Corp (ORCL) saw a similar increase in the number of filers without a dramatic change in ave. conviction level – which given the selloff at the very end of the year was probably just value-hunters finally dipping a toe in the water:

Delphi Automotive (DLPH) was a popular post-reorg equity among our group of filers with an average conviction level at over 3%:

The SPDR Gold ETF (GLD) is interesting because although the number of holders has declined, the average conviction among them is very high at 6.9%.

Microsoft (MSFT) is another name that has seen the number of holders decline but among those still holding the bet is getting bigger – and is paying off in 2012:

The last position we’ll highlight is Michael Kors Holdings (KORS) which despite going public on Dec 15th, still saw 3 funds in our group start small positions :
